How Marathon Monday is Like a Marketing Strategy

Running a marathon is like a marketing strategy.

If you are a runner, you are probably aware that completing a marathon is one of the greatest challenges a runner can face, but also well worth the reward of crossing the finish line at the end. As it takes a full 26.2 miles to complete a marathon, runners realize this is no easy task. Training can take people years to get their bodies physically and mentally fit. Marathon Monday is like a marketing strategy. Not everyone runs in Marathon Monday (every Patriot’s Day in Boston) and likewise, not all companies engage in marketing tactics for their businesses. Marketing strategies may be that uphill battle (Commonwealth Ave. for the Boston Marathon, anyone?), but when said and done, completing a successful marketing initiative for a business is that feeling of euphoria that runners experience after crossing the finish line. And here’s why:

1. Training and mental preparation

Just like a runner preparing to train their body to run 26.2 miles up hills and over varying terrain, a company who wants to promote their brand must take appropriate measures before executing their plan. By surveying the space around them, and seeing what has or hasn’t already been done, brands can get a feel for what’s worked and what hasn’t in the past. What’s original versus what’s old and stale? Companies brainstorming original and fresh marketing perspectives will be the ones to hit the jackpot at the end.

2. Need an H20 break along the way? Take some time and reboot the engine

On Marathon Monday, most runners are not in-it-to-win-it, but for the sheer experience of running a marathon and being cheered on by thousands of fellow Bostonians handing out water, Gatorade and orange slices for energy. Sometimes runners need to take a break and re-assess their strategy. Have they started off fast in the beginning and are feeling tired only a few miles into the race? Similar to marketing strategies, sometimes it’s best to take a break and learn to pace yourself. For marketers, the same applies. Whether it’s a campaign, project or promotion, brands simply cannot execute their strategies in one sitting. These efforts take time and will not be successful overnight. Ample planning, meeting, research and execution time should be spaced out over the course of a significant period of time to show appropriate results.

3. Don’t give up yet: the finish line is in sight!

Whether you’re a marketer or a runner or something else, many of us have experienced that “YOU’RE SO CLOSE” moment through races, initiatives, or even a simple workout on the elliptical when you just really want to get off at minute 27 instead of pushing through to minute 30. Everyone wants to give up at the end; after all, they put in ample effort at this point and have become over exhausted, overheated, and simply, over it. But it’s at this point where you must find it within yourself to cross the finish line. No, it’s not easy, but don’t forget to listen to those cheers of encouragement coming from the sidelines. The uphill battle is almost over as you can see the Prudential tower in sight. Marketing strategies feel the same way! Maybe brands have failed in the past, or they cannot get a hold on their targeted demographics. Whatever the reason may be, by pushing yourself and your brand to the limit, you will be able to finish proud and accomplished.

Canadian Drug Shortages Lead to Calls for Regulation

Canada is facing major drug shortages

In the pharmaceutical world, Canada is falling lower on the totem pole due to major drug shortages. RAPS (Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society) reports that the manufacturing plant that produces nearly 90% of all injectable drugs used in Canada, owned by Sandoz Canda, recently caught fire. These injectable drugs ranged from anesthetics to painkillers to antibiotics.

So, what now?

Canadians are calling for Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s help and to propose regulations targeted at mending these issues. Harper responded that Health Canada is working on solutions to fixing this crisis, including finding multiple sources for vital medication.

What is foreseen for Canada’s drug and pharmaceutical future? Will drug prices drastically increase due to this shortage of medications? How will the US be involved? Let us know your thoughts on this major issue that Canada is facing!

How to Stand Out from Your ComPINtition

How to make Pinterest work for YOUR company!

By now, many of you have probably heard about Pinterest: the visual website where thousands of individual users and brands alike are “pinning” images to personalized boards online. Pinterest has helped close the gap of visual culture with technology and social media. Yes, we love to see pretty pictures of outfits, hairstyles, food display, and exotic vacation destinations (okay, so maybe the females do at least!), but Pinterest is beginning to open their doors to brands and businesses, too. Find out how your brand can boost its image through Pinterest!

According to an article by AdAge, a brand’s image strategy must contain the following three elements: audience engagement, audience acquisition, and revenue. Audience engagement refers to a brand finding that niche with their audience. Ask yourself the question, why would people want to visit our page? By investing in high-quality images on your Pinterest board and organizing images into various categories of your company, people will be drawn to these categories by their specific interests, passions, skills or hobbies. However, pinners beware that images won’t direct website traffic to other websites, or worse, your competitors!

Next, audience acquisition asks how brands can convert audience engagement into sharing. Pinterest’s platform helps to make sharing easy through “pinning”. Pinning images simply means clicking a button and tah-dah, your image is instantly uploaded to your own personal board. Making the decision of what to pin may be the trickiest part of audience acquisition. Put yourself in your audience’s shoes: what would that specific demographic want to see? Don’t forget to be creative! Funny, shocking, or aesthetically pleasing images tend to lure in greater audiences.

Finally, revenue targets how much money a brand can bring in. Why not pin deals or promotions on your company’s board? By hounding in on promotions, giveaways and incentives to visit your pin board over your competitors, pinners all over will be drawn in instantly. Who says Pinterest can’t make your brand a few extra bucks? Be creative!

What To Do About High Gas Prices?

Many of us have heard the rumors about gas prices increasing to nearly $5 per gallon in just two short months from now. Unfortunately, at the rate gas prices are steadily increasing, this myth may be a harsh reality for anyone with an oil-powered automobile. A.K.A. most of the United States.

The uncertainty about oil supply due to Middle East turmoil attribute to the skyrocketing gas prices, but also shows us that the US dollar’s worth is declining and so is our purchasing power. And fast.

The article, “There is Something We Can Do About High Gas Prices”, suggests that in our current state where we have little to no control over the astonishingly high gas prices the US should consider additional gas drilling and creating more of a market for solar and wind powered eco-friendly products, including electrical cars.

What do you think about skyrocketing gas prices? Will you continue to use your gas guzzling car and shell out hundreds of dollars per month or will you cut back on travel? At what price limit do you think society will make the shift to driving electric and renewable energy automobiles? Comment below and let us know your thoughts!
